INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY THEFT PROTECTION

Brasidas Group's Early Warning Theft (EWT) Service is designed to help companies identify potential threats to proprietary information by utilizing a series of key terms. IT professionals can use these key terms in conjunction with existing security tools to identify those who may be attempting to solicit Intellectual Property (IP) from employees or other internal sources.

At its core, the EWT Service is an early-warning system comprised of two parts. The first element - the Alert Phase - is the list of key terms in Farsi, English, and Pinglish (Farsi written in Latin alphabet) which a perpetrator might use in various ways: in an email message, contained in an application or program document, or in a web address the employee is seeking to visit. These key terms have been narrowly selected based on their usage by Iranian entities and individuals identified as having been actively engaged in the acquisition of IP. The EWT Service key terms are selected from local language government policy papers, augmented by online research by Brasidas Group team members as well as from our experience investigating specific cases of theft of proprietary and sensitive corporate information by foreign entities. Every key term on the EWT Service list has been encountered during an investigation into a case of such theft or is directly connected to known organizations, venues, and individuals tied to IP theft. The list of key terms is updated and refined to minimize false hits and to ensure that the EWT Service includes only the most relevant terms.

In the hands of a company's security professional, each instance of hits is a red flag, which may signal the need for additional review or tracking for longer-term analysis. This is the second element of the EWT Service - the Assessment Phase. Specialized Brasidas Group team members with years of experience investigating IP theft operations who speak, read, and write Farsi will review and assess, in collaboration with your company's security professionals, each of the hits generated by the EWT Service and make recommendations on relevance and additional investigative steps.

Typically, Brasidas Group is called in by a client to investigate the loss of proprietary information that has shown up in the hands of a competitor overseas. On numerous occasions, the path to the theft of proprietary information often begins with an appeal to Iranian nationals based abroad, enticing them to return to their home country with attractive job offers or incentives to set up a business. The EWT Service is a tool to identify the potential threat early on, before it develops into a full-blown technology acquisition operation. In this way, it protects the employee unwittingly caught in such a scheme and safeguards the company's broader interests.
